This video [date: 29 July 2026 has come to light and garnered significant attention in defense circles worldwide. This is because it proves that China is not restricting its most dangerous naval missiles to large vessels but is also installing them on most of its fleet's modern destroyers. Previously, it missile was only tested on large Type 055 class destroyers. But now it can also be available on approximately 35 Type 052D destroyers, which are the backbone of China's navy. Combining these two classes, China has more than 40 such modern surface ships that can carry this hypersonic missile.
But before getting into details, one crucial question must be addressed

Friends, a hypersonic missile is one that flies at more than five times the speed of sound, i.e., at speeds above Mach Five. and The YJ-20 is a boost-glide missile. Which means that first, a rocket booster takes it to altitude. Then the missile itself, with the help of its fins and shape, It glides forward and can also maneuver mid-flight, meaning it can turn.
Experts estimate that YJ-20 missile can achieve higher speeds than the Mach Six during the mid-course flight and reach close to the Mach 10 in the terminal phase. Its range is reported to be between 1000 to 1500 km. Some estimates also put it up to 2000 km. This missile is approximately 8 1/2 to 9 meters long and its diameter is less than 850 mm. This allows it to fit into China's Universal Vertical Launch System. This system is called HT1 and in which, the missile is cold-launched, It is ejected in this manner.

The
HT-1 system is the system through which, first the missile exits the cell. Then its booster ignites, so that the pressure of hot gases inside the ship remains low, and different types of missiles can be stored in the same cell.
China’s two destroyer classes, the Type 055 Renhai -class Destroyer and the Type 052D Luyang III -class Destroyer. The Type 052 Destroyer has weight of around 7500-7700 tons and can carry 32 or 64 VLS cells. Whereas the larger Type 055 has 112 cells. China has made both of these such that the same cell can hold land attack, anti-ship, or air defense missiles. This gives the commander the flexibility to change the missile mix based on the mission. But each YJ-20 occupies a cell which would otherwise have been used for defensive missiles. Therefore, it is important to know how many missiles are present on how many ships because the actual threat depends on quantity and distribution.
Friends, this missile, with its bike shape and nearly vertical It's special due to its terminal dive. Because it can maneuver during re-entry, defensive radars have to constantly make new calculations. Conventional anti-ship missiles approach in a straight line. But the speed and maneuverability of hypersonic missiles leave defensive systems with very little gives time. American carrier strike groups which are equipped with Aegis system and SM3 or SM6 interceptors might have to face such an attack. But so far, the performance of this missile has not been proven in actual combat.

It depends on Over The Horizon Radars, drones, aircrafts, satellites, and secure communication links. If any one of these links is broken then the missile is ineffective.

China's Anti-Access and Area Denial, or A2/AD, system previously consisted of land-based assets like the DF-21D, aircraft, submarines, DF-26 missiles, and satellites. Now, by equipping Type 052D destroyers with the YJ-20, this system has extended towards the sea.
Destroyers are ground-based batteries In contrast, they can move rapidly. They can hide under the Flat's air defense umbrella and fire from multiple directions. This forces American and Allied commanders to face threats from several directions simultaneously and conserve their limited interceptors Around Taiwan, if these missile-equipped destroyers patrol, American carriers may have to stay away from the island. This reduces their aircraft's flight time. The pressure on fuel supply also increases and surveillance resources get more scattered.
The same situation could arise in the South China Sea where Type 052D regularly patrol. Due to their larger numbers, China can exert pressure over a geographically wider area. Whereas the less numerous Type 055 provide more missile and command capabilities. If these ships go east of Taiwan or into the Philippine Sea, their range can also reach other island chains. But there, far from the Chinese mainland's defensive lines, they can put themselves at risk. Because air-launched [or similar] submarines, aircraft, and anti-ship missiles can attack them.
Friends, the real strength of this missile lies not in its speed, but in its versatility and the ability to work in concert with other systems. The problem comes when one launches several destroyers at once from different angles, because the system has to prioritize one over the other, and that leaves the second one with less coverage.
