J-20 vs Su-75 Checkmate Comparison 2026: How Do China’s and Russia’s Stealth Fighters Compare?

J-20 vs Su-75 Checkmate: Which Fighter Is More Capable?

J-20 vs Su-75 Checkmate

China's J-20 and the Russian Su-75 fighter aircraft are both stealth fighter 5th-gen aircraft's. However, their approach, design, size, weapons, overall specifications, and role are quite different from each other. China's J-20 is already an operational stealth fighter on March 2017, and has undergone improvements over time in terms of engines, avionics systems, sensors, and weapons.

A variant is also being developed called the J-20A. On the other hand if we talk about  the   Russian  Su-75 Checkmate is a lightweight, single-engine stealth fighter project being developed as a comparatively affordable option in the 5th-generation fighter market. That is, the Su-75 is still in development.

But the Both aircraft focusing on stealth technology and advanced air-combat capabilities. So comparing the J-20 and Su-75 will help us understand how China and Russia are taking different approaches to modern stealth airpower—and which fighter might ultimately be more capable.

China Chengdu J-20 Fighter Jet

J-20 Fighter jet detailed background and specifications

China Chengdu (J-series) Fighter jet J-20 is a twin-engine, fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft of China. That is, J-20 has 2 engines installed. It has been developed by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group for the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).

If we talk about its development background, then the development of J-20 is linked to China's efforts in the late 1990s, where the focus was on developing such an advanced fighter aircraft which could compete with modern Western and Russian aircraft. China developed different types of aircraft till the 1990s, which included trainer aircraft to fighter aircraft. And the J-series J-10 was also in the development stages until the 1990s, with its first flight taking place in 1998

After the J-10, China developed the J-11, J-15, J-16, J-20, J-35 and now the 6th-generation J-36, which is still in the development stages and not completed. Along with this, the JF-17 Thunder program also started in the 1990s.

But since we are talking about the J-Series J-20, the Powerful Chengdu J-20 prototype made its first flight successfully on 11 January 2011, which was an important milestone for China's fifth-generation fighter development program's. After several years of flight testing and development, the aircraft began entering operational service around 2017, with China publicly announcing its operational status in March 2017.

This fighter jet was designed by China as a long-range stealth air-superiority fighter, with a special focus on low observability, beyond-visual-range combat, advanced sensors and carrying advanced weapons internally. Its large powerful twin-engine configuration provides more size and internal space than similar lightweight single-engine stealth fighter concepts.

These aircraft has a distinctive canard-delta configuration, outward-canted vertical stabilizers, angular fuselage and internal weapon bays, which help reduce radar signature from detection's.

Its design also provides space for a large internal fuel capacity, which is important for long-range missions. One of the Chengdu J-20’s most important characteristics is its continuous development – not only the early aircraft but the later improved models of J-20 Stealth Fighters are continually upgraded.

The early J-20s were equipped with Russian AL-31-series engines, while the later ones have Chinese WS-10C engines. Now China is developing and testing a much more powerful WS-15 engine for the  J-20, capable of supplying more thrust, power, and efficiency that would allow the J-20 to achieve high speeds. One such prototype was spotted in 2023 – But the J-20’s continuous development is not over yet, but is continuously evolving.

If we talk about the J-20's combat capability, its avionics and sensor systems also play a very important role. The fighter is equipped with an AESA radar and the aircraft is designed to combine information from multiple sensors to give the pilot a more comprehensive picture of the battlefield.

Its stealth characteristics make the aircraft comparatively difficult to detect and track, while long-range sensors and air-to-air missiles provide the aircraft the capability to engage targets before entering close-range combat. And The J-20 is specifically equipped with the PL-15 long-range air-to-air missile, while its internal side weapon bays can carry PL-10 short-range air-to-air missiles.

If we look at its dimensions and performance in detail, the J-20 measures approximately 20.4 meters in length, while its wingspan is around 13.5 meters. Its maximum speed is reported to be approximately Mach 2

According to publicly reported specifications, the J-20's maximum range is generally reported to be around 3,240 nautical miles and its combat radius is around 1,080 nautical miles. The aircraft can carry a substantial weapons load in its internal weapon bays while maintaining its low-observable configuration. As mentioned in the paragraph above, it uses the PL-15 long-range air-to-air missile and the PL-10 short-range air-to-air missile.

Here we should mention that the current J-20 is not limited to its original configuration; new variants such as the J-20A are also being developed. This new variant features some changes related to the airframe, avionics, and propulsion, making the aircraft incredibly powerful in modern air combat.

So, by 2026, the J-20 will no longer be just an experimental fifth-generation fighter. It will become an operational combat aircraft, with an expansion in its production base and multiple improvements to the aircraft.

The combination of stealth, long-range air-combat capability, advanced sensors, internal weapons carriage, and continued engine and avionics development makes the J-20 one of China's most important modern fighter aircraft. This established operational status will be particularly important in the comparison when the J-20 will be pitted against Russia's Su-75 Checkmate, as the Su-75 is still in the development and prototype-construction stage.

Su-75 Checkmate Fighter Jet

The China's Su-75 Checkmate is Russia's stealth fighter aircraft project, which the Sukhoi Design Bureau and United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) began development after the MAKS air show in 2021. The aircraft is being developed as a lightweight fifth-gen fighter consisting of a single-engine fighter. The aircraft's design benefits from experience and technologies gained from Russia's Su-57 program, but the Su-75 is developed as an independent single-engine light tactical fighter.

If we go into detail about its dimensions, design, speed, length wingspan and overall performance, the Russian Su-75 checkmate has a length of approximately 17.7 meters and a wingspan of approximately 11.8 meters. The aircraft's maximum speed is reported to be Mach 1.8, while its range, according to UAC, is approximately 2,900 kilometers (km).

The fifth generation Su-75 is designed to carry a maximum combat load of 7,400 kilograms(kg) and is also equipped with internal weapons bays, a significant weapons capacity for its relatively lightweight fighter design.

The most significant characteristic of this fifth-generation fighter aircraft is the stealth-centric design. These aircraft uses an angular fuselage, specifically shaped airframe surfaces and internal weapons carriage, all of which were designed to reduce radar cross-section. A single engine configuration makes the Su-75 a comparatively smaller and lighter platform than a twin-engine heavy fighter like the J-20. Its purpose is not to be limited only to air-to-air combat only, as it is being designed as a multirole fighter that can perform both air-to-mass and air-to-ground missions.

The Su-75 is being developed with advanced fifth-generation technologies in terms of avionics and sensor systems. It is conceptualized to integrate an advanced radar system, modern electronic warfare capabilities, and multiple sensors

The aircraft's design is intended to enable pilots to operate in beyond-visual-range engagements and modern network-centric warfare. Its weapons architecture includes internal weapon bays, while Russia has presented plans to make the aircraft compatible with various air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons.

The engine is also a key component in the Su-75's development. The aircraft is designed for a single-engine configuration, and its propulsion program is tied to Russia's newer-generation turbofan technology. The single-engine arrangement could help reduce the aircraft's weight, internal space, and overall operating cost, but final performance assessment will only be possible once the prototype undergoes actual flight testing.

The Russian Su-75's biggest difference from the China J-20 is its development status.   because   The J-20 has entered operational service, while the Su-75 is not yet an operational fighter. Russia has faced delays in aircraft development and prototype construction, and the Su-75's first flight is not completed until 2026
Therefore, many figures for its speed, range, maneuverability, stealth, and weapons capabilities are currently based on the manufacturer's published or projected specifications, not operational combat experience.

This means that it is more accurate to view the Su-75 Checkmate in 2026 as a developing fifth-generation fighter project rather than as a completed fifth-generation fighter.

Which Fighter Is More Capable Su-75 checkmate or J-20?

If we compare these two aircraft overall, the J-20 has an operational advantage because its Su-75 checkmate is still in the development stage. The China J-20 has seen several years of flight testing, weapons integration, and upgrades, while the Su-75's actual flight performance has not yet been demonstrated.

Furthermore, if we talk about its aircraft size, range, and air combat capability, the J-20 currently has an clear advantage here as well, J-20 is a larger twin-engine fighter designed for long-range missions and internal weapons carriage. In comparison, the Su-75 is being developed as a smaller, single-engine, and relatively affordable fighter.

Furthermore, both aircraft focus on advanced stealth technology, sensors, and modern air combat technologies. Both share the concept of a low-observable design, internal weapons carriage, and advanced avionics

However, the J-20 has a practical advantage because its systems and capabilities have been developed and improved through actual flight operations. The Su-75's advanced radar, sensors, and AI-assisted systems are still in the planned/development stage.

Russia is designing the Su-75 to provide strong multirole capabilities in the future. However, its final performance can only be properly judged after flight testing.

Therefore, if the comparison is based on current capability and operational maturity, the China J-20 is the more capable fighter. Because The Russian Sukhoi Su-75 could become a capable and potentially affordable fifth-generation fighter in the future, but until its prototype completes flight testing and demonstrates its actual capabilities, it is difficult to call it more capable than the China Airforce Chengdu J-20.

FINAL VERDICT:

In final verdict If we look Overall, this two Aircraft comparison is based only on current status and publicly revealed specifications, so we will not declare the J-20 or Su-75 Checkmate as the overall winner. This is because the Su-75 Checkmate is still in the development stage and its full operational performance has not yet been demonstrated. A more complete and fair comparison of the two aircraft will be possible when the Su-75 enters operational service with its full features.

For now, it can be said with certainty that the J-20 has a clear advantage in terms of operational status, operational experience, tested systems, integrated weapons, and mature combat capabilities, while the Su-75's actual capabilities can only be properly assessed after its flight testing and future operational service.
