Saudi Arabia and US F-35 Deal 2026: Benefits, Challenges & F-35A Specifications

An F-35 deal is currently being negotiated between the United States and Saudi Arabia; essentially, Saudi Arabia is seeking to acquire F-35 jets from the US. The deal is estimated to be worth approximately $24.3 billion and encompasses everything from the aircraft themselves to engines, support equipment, training, and other related systems.

According to Reuters site, this package will include 48 F-35 aircraft, 49 Pratt & Whitney F135 engines (48 for the aircraft plus one spare), communications equipment, spare parts, and other support items. However, the deal has not yet been finalized, as Congress must review the proposed sale; consequently, F-35 jets have not yet been delivered to Saudi Arabia. Even if the congressional process is completed, deliveries could take several years. Another important point is that the State Department's approval covers the potential sale of 48 F-35 aircraft; this does not mean Saudi Arabia will receive the aircraft immediately.

Additionally, according to Janes, the proposed aircraft are likely to be the F-35 conventional take-off and landing variant, although the specific variant was not explicitly stated in the approval notification.

Benefits and Potential Challenges of the Saudi Arabia F-35 Deal

If Saudi Arabia buys the US F-35, then Saudi Arabia will require America's assistance, its maintenance, engine, for everything. You will constantly need the country from which you bought the equipment to keep your fleet operational. And when it comes to America, the situation becomes much more stringent.

Suppose you have to integrate a new missile into the F-35 It is. For this, America's need and permission to upgrade any software. The F-35 would provide the Saudi Air Force with stronger advanced stealth capabilities, making the aircraft difficult to detect during certain missions compared to conventional fighter jets. Additionally, it could enhance Saudi Arabia's air-to-air and air-to-ground combat capabilities and power, as well as its battlefield awareness and homeland defense capabilities.

The F-35’s advanced sensors, communication systems, and data-sharing capabilities could also help Saudi forces improve interoperability with US and other allied forces.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia would receive more than just the aircraft; the proposed package includes training, its spare parts, maintenance, and technical support—as will with all crucial  for  keeping  the  F-35 fleet operational. Alongside its existing fleet of F-15s and Eurofighter Typhoons, the F-35 would provide an additional high-end capability, while also further strengthening defense cooperation and the strategic military relationship with the United States.
