China’s Type 095 Nuclear Attack Submarine Revealed | A New Threat in the Pacific Ocean

China Type 095 Nuclear Attack Submarine Near Launch – Satellite Image Reveals Secret Naval Shipyard Expansion

China’s Secret Type 095 Submarine Nears Launch

The ocean always appears silent. But the biggest changes are often born within that silence. This time, the anomaly was not in the water but in space. Satellite imagery captured on 9 February 2026 showed a submarine at China’s Huludao shipyard complex in Liaoning province, which defense analysts assessed as a possible Type 095.

The Type 095 nuclear-powered attack submarine is a new generation of attack submarines built by China. Many analysts believe that it could represent a new generation of Chinese attack submarine designed to eventually replace or operate alongside the Type 093-class.

This development has attracted the attention of defense analysts to this development, as the submarine is not an isolated case, but part of a larger naval strategy. According to the American analytical organization, the Institute for the Study of War, the location of the vessel was revealed by the publication of the photo, as the submarine was located inside the launch bay of Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Corporation. This indicates that the vessel has reached an advanced stage of construction; however, its launch and operation still have to be confirmed.

This new generation nuclear submarine is intended to bolster China’s undersea deterrent in the Western Pacific and offset the growing military pressure on Taiwan. China has made remarkable progress in recent decades in nuclear submarines development. As a result, during 2021-2025, China will produce ten nuclear submarines, which will displace 79,000 tons, while the U.S. Navy’s counterparts will total 55,000 tons (The National Interest).

Accordingly, this gap is also reflected in the production of nuclear-powered submarines, since,
by 2024-2025, China has achieved the ability to produce one ballistic missile submarine and two attack submarines per year. By 2028, the U.S. Navy has planned to achieve the same level as China has demonstrated. It shows that China is not only catching up in speed, but also reaching parity with American naval planning.

How the Type 095 Could Change Naval Warfare

The Type 095 features several major design improvements. Its rear section uses an X-tail configuration instead of the traditional rudder arrangement seen in older Chinese nuclear submarines. This design improves maneuverability and underwater control, especially in deep or complex ocean environments.

The submarine also appears to lack external control planes on its sail, suggesting the use of retractable hull-mounted bow planes. Such changes indicate that China is modernizing its submarine design philosophy. The length of the vessel is estimated between 110 and 115 meters with the width of around 12 to 13 meters. Its underwater displacement is estimated between 9,000 and 10,000 tons. Thus, being bigger than the 093’s 7,000 tons. The 093 is Type 093.

The bigger size may suggest that it will carry more sophisticated equipment, power plants, and weaponry. The gap found behind the sail is another hint on the type of the submarine. According to the experts, the ship is likely to carry a “Vertical Launch System,” and in its capacity, up to 18 cells to carry the YJ-18 anti-ship or land-attack cruise missiles. Earlier, the 093B was supposed to launch missiles from the 12-cell VLS, and 095 will have much more weapon modules to fire various missiles. It is reported that unlike the ballistic missile subs, Type 095 is to act as a guided missile attack submarine, and it is to carry out its tasks against ships and land targets.

One of the most anticipated changes is the application of a pump-jet propulsion, on which scientists are working now. It is a better alternative to the traditional screw propeller since it produces fewer noises at higher speeds. In the race to silence opponents, the quietness and stealth of the submarine are regarded as one of the most critical advantages. It makes undetectability possible, and in the end, there is nothing a pursuer can do for the opponent ship to stop escaping.

The other notable feature is that the Chinese design team is to apply a different type of structure. The water line of the hull is located high on the boat, while the lower part has a red stripe on it. This solution hints at the possibility of a single- or multi-hull design (the two options are considered to be a variant of a single-hull). The previous subs of China applied double-hull structures. Although the single-hull ones are more complex, they offer more volume.

The Type 095 is supposed to be a platform for anti-surface warfare. It should be noted that anti-ship missiles have a much longer range than the sub’s ASW (anti-submarine warfare) capability. In the event of a Taiwan crisis, such submarines could become a serious threat to American naval forces operating between Guam and Taiwan.

China already possesses long-range anti-ship weapons launched from land, aircraft, and surface ships. The Type 095 would add a powerful underwater strike capability to this network. China’s industrial capacity at the Huludao shipyard is also rapidly expanding. Reports suggest the eastern assembly hall contains twelve construction slots measuring 144 meters each, while the southern hall contains eight larger slots. In theory, twenty nuclear submarine hulls can be in various stages of construction at one time.

In early 2025 China is estimated to have twelve nuclear powered submarines (six being ballistic missile subs and the other six being attack or guided missile subs) and forty-six conventional subs. The United States has about sixty-five submarines, but about a third of those are usually in maintenance.

Researchers argue that if China accelerates the rate at which it produces stealthy submarines, and the US Los Angeles class submarines are retired at a faster rate than they are replaced, by 2030, the US will possess fewer than fifty attack submarines.

This would change the strategic balance in the Pacific. The shift beneath the Pacific's surface has implications far beyond the water's edge. The Type 095 is not simply another submarine — it represents a shift in strategic balance. As underwater power grows, surface fleets must also rethink their calculations. This silent transformation could reshape military strategy in the Western Pacific for years to come.
