| India’s 114 Rafale Deal Explained |
This all started in May 2026, when India issued a letter of request to France for 114 Rafale jets. In that letter, India had written that it should provide its detailed proposal, price and other information for 114 Rafale jets. In response to which, on 6 August 2026, France/Dassault submitted its technical and commercial proposal in response to India's (LOR).
Now the question arises, what did France offer India in response to the Letter of Request?
The proposal reportedly includes details on aircraft configuration, pricing, weapons, support arrangements and industrial participation. However, the proposal is not the same as a final signed procurement contract. This proposal, along with the prices of the aircraft, also mentions the local production of Rafale aircraft in India. If this proposal is converted into a final agreement in the future, India will not only get additional Rafales but may also get an opportunity to improve its aerospace and defense production capabilities through local manufacturing.
Reports have estimated the proposed program at around $34–35 billion, although the final cost could change during negotiations and contract finalization. Considering this cost, it could become one of the most expensive deals in India's defense procurement history.
Let us also tell you that this $34.1 billion USD amount is not just the base price of the aircraft, but this amount could also include support equipment, training, weapons, maintenance and local production costs in India.
France is offering the option of cooperating in the production of Rafale aircraft in India, which could lead to some Rafale jets being manufactured in India in the future. This would not be limited to the delivery of the aircraft, but could also aim to strengthen India's domestic aerospace industry, manufacturing capabilities and defense production infrastructure.

Therefore the question which will arise is how many Rafale jet fighters are currently possessed by India and how many Rafale jet fighters will India be in possession of after the deal final, the response to that is currently India has 36 Rafale jet fighters. while on the final of this deal, If all 114 additional aircraft are eventually delivered, India's Rafale fleet would rise from 36 aircraft currently operated by the IAF to 150 Rafales. This means that such a large Rafale fleet will help the Indian Air Force increase its combat capability and will also meet various airbase and operational requirements.

What the 114-Rafale Proposal Means for India ?
The proposed acquisition will indeed constitute a significant boost to India's existing orders of Rafale aircraft. But it extends far beyond this, for if completed the programme would both increase India's combat-aircraft projection capacity and add substantial depth to India's industrial know-how in aero-engineering and combat-aircraft maintenance and assembly.
The proposed acquisition is significant for another reason, for India finds itself at a crossroads between its immediate requirement for combat aircraft and its indigenous combat-aircraft development programmes. The additional Rafales would give India a proven multirole aircraft, while home-grown projects such as the Tejas Mk2 and AMCA advance.
However, the proposal should not be treated as a completed deal yet. Dassault has submitted its technical and commercial offer, but pricing, contractual terms, production arrangements and other details still have to go through the relevant stages before a final agreement is signed.
